Inhalt
Hate speech, i.e., speech that promotes hatred toward an individual or group on the basis of a characteristic such as race, gender, sexuality, nationality, or religion, is known to cause considerable psychological and social harms to the members of the group targeted for hate. In the philosophy of language, this has led to the question of how hate speech brings such attitudinal, emotional, and behavioral changes about. Similar questions arise in connection with political speech, and Donald J. Trump‘s speech of January 6 2021 shows that the boundaries between political speech and hate speech can even become blurred. The lectures of this series on the philosophy of language of hate speech and political speech tackle these issues from different perspectives, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of research in the field.
