Conversation with Ellen Tordesillas - in english
There are few countries in the world where it is more dangerous to work as a journalist than in the Philippines. In the ranking by 'Reporters Without Borders', the country is 136th out of 180 in terms of press freedom. Critical journalists face defamation charges, violence and even fatal attacks. Perpetrators usually go unpunished.
Ellen Tordesillas is rightly considered the 'Grande Dame' of Philippine investigative journalism. The fact-checking platform "VERA Files", which she co-founded, has identified the current president Rodrigo Duterte as the main source of fake news. In addition it describes the violent methods used against critical media representatives. The multi-award-winning journalist receives numerous death threats and is considered to be in danger. Thanks to the "Hamburger Stiftung für politisch Verfolgte", Ellen Tordesillas currently lives and works in Hamburg.
In a discussion with Hannah Wolf from the "philippinenbüro e.V. im Asienhaus", she reports on her work and life as a journalist, on current political developments and perspectives for her country.
The conversation will be held in English without translation.
